AP Portfolio: Founding Folklore
These artworks were for an AP Portfolio course. For my theme, I chose to look at elements of American folklore and find connections to modern U.S. culture, with the story of John Henry and its relation to modern attitudes about work and technology being a recurring motif. I experimented with a variety of styles, like in the Johnny Appleseed piece, which uses a more painterly style for the historical top half and changes to a geometric, vector-like style for the modern day, or in the black-and-white John Henry piece, which similarly switches from a more organic to a more geometric style to evoke a sense of tradition versus modernity. I especially focused on digital painting since I hadn’t done much before this project and generally focused on styles more similar to Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.
