The Bells Cover
skills: cover design / asset research / photo manipulation / lettering / typography
The Bells is the final novel by Cai Emmons telling the story of Niall O’Malley as he returns from his attempt to live as a monk and makes the transition to high school history teacher, seeking an escape and finding that his new situation may prove just as challenging. In this project for Red Hen Press, I aimed to create intriguing imagery that would capture the sense of tension that won’t let readers put this story down.
Another consideration for the cover was what meaning could be revealed after reading. In addition to conveying the tone of the story, the piercing blue eye and the haphazard tattoos have significance that readers can discover as the story unfolds.
For the back cover, I chose a rich blue fitting for the complex themes and undertones of darkness while being simple to balance the highly detailed imagery of the cover and highlight the text information.
